On a warm Octo­ber evening of 1830, in a small mud-​hut hos­pi­tal at the heart of the new Swan River colony, the first Euro­pean child in that region was born. The birth of the young girl was cause for cel­e­bra­tion: her birth sealed the pro­duc­tive and fer­tile future of the colony.
At first she instilled awe and zeal in her fel­low set­tlers as she promptly excelled in any field of endeav­our she put in her mind to attempt. But that would soon change.
